Mitchell Schools Hosts Regional Special Olympics Games
On May 27th, the Special Olympics Highland Region Special Olympics games were held at Mitchell High School under nearly perfect weather conditions. Athletes from Avery, Madison and Mitchell Counties had a wonderful time demonstrating the skills they had developed during weeks of training in front of family, coaches and “fans in the stands”. Events that took place during the competition included volleyball, a bocce tournament, the Young Athletes Program, the Motor Activities Training Program, and numerous track and field events.
Josh Burleson led the athletes in their Special Olympics oath
After the athletes were called to gather for the games by piper Andrew Warburton of Marion, the competition was dedicated to the memory of past Special Olympics athlete Robin Young. Robin’s family, Chris, Lisa and Zac Boone, helped the Mitchell County Special Olympics athletes bring in the Flame of Hope to light the cauldron. These athletes lead the Opening Ceremonies with the help of Master of Ceremonies Bruce Ikard of WTOE.
The 2015 Highland Region Special Olympics games will be hosted by Avery County and then the event will return to Mitchell County the following year.
