Officials in North Carolina have announced that the drinking water for the Town of Burnsville is among the 38 water systems being honored by the state for surpassing both state and federal requirements. The 38 systems received the N.C. Area Wide Optimization Award from the state N.C. Division of Water Supply Section. The awards are part of a program to enhance the performance of existing surface water treatment facilities. The awards are given each year to water systems that demonstrate outstanding turbidity removal, which is a test of the cloudiness or haziness of the water caused by that be a medium for microbial growth particles and could potentially contain harmful bacteria and viruses. While most drinking water systems meet strict state and federal standards, these systems met performance goals that are significantly more stringent.
