On June 16th Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Josh S. Sparks received a report from Mitchell County DSS that a 13-month-old male had reportedly fallen off a bed onto a hardwood floor and sustained a skull fracture along with retinal hemorrhages. The child was in the sole care of Eric Shane Nunn, the child's mother's fiancé, when the incident occurred. Nunn rushed the child to the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital around 7 a.m and the child was airlifted to Mission Hospital and later on to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Chief Deputy Sparks met with Eric Shane Nunn the next day to discuss the incident. Nunn stated that he had the child lying on his bed changing the child's diaper; he briefly walked out of the bedroom to retrieve the child's sippy cup when he heard a loud "thud" in the bedroom. Nunn said he stepped back into the bedroom and found the child lying unresponsive on the bedroom floor. After reviewing reports and discussing the incident with medical professionals from Mission Hospital as well as UNC Hospital, Chief Deputy Sparks determined that the severity of the child's injuries were inconsistent with a short fall from a bed. On July 7th Eric Shane Nunn was arrested by Chief Deputy Sparks and was charged with one count of Felonious Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury. Nunn is currently in custody under a $250,000.00 secure bond. The injured child was treated and released from UNC Hospital and is to receive follow-up treatment from Mission Hospital.
