A 12-hour standoff Friday in Spruce Pine
A Spruce Pine Police officer was dispatched to a home on Sunnybrook Drive Friday after a neighbor reported a woman screaming for help. The officer found a woman in the street and said she had been seriously assaulted. Police report that 54 year old Mark Robinson was at the front door of the home, pointing a rifle at the officer and the woman. The Spruce Pine Police were able to get the woman to safety, and then called for backup from the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department, Yancey County Sheriff's Department, McDowell County Sheriff's Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The woman was transported to Blue Ridge Regional and treated for injuries. Law enforcement officers made several attempts to contact Robinson throughout the day. Robinson discharged a firearm at least once. That night, an SBI robot made it inside the home to find Robinson had died from a self inflicted gun shot. Officers say Robinson had a long history of assaults on law enforcement officers.
