Liberty Hill Baptist Church, located in the Estatoe community of Mitchell County, held its third annual Back-to-School Bash on Saturday, July 26, and approximately 1,500 people attended. Over 400 students from Mitchell, Yancey, Avery, McDowell, and surrounding counties received backpacks, a variety of school supplies, personal hygiene items, and new clothing to help them start the school year successfully. New Testament Bibles, donated by the Gideons, were available to everyone who attended.
Liberty Hill collected and distributed supplies to all school-aged children who attended the event, including backpacks, pens, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, highlighters, crayons, colored pencils, notebooks, loose-leaf paper, binders, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Members of the church and numerous donors helped to organize and provide these supplies. In addition to these items, everyone who attended received a free meal, and the children enjoyed bouncing with Funtime Inflatables and taking aim at the dunking booth.
Liberty Hill would like to acknowledge and thank the following donors for their generosity to this great event and the people of this area: Bombardier Recreational Products; Burger King, which donated a portion of their sales; McDonald’s; Hardee’s; Western Sizzlin’ of Spruce Pine; Subway of Spruce Pine; Wal-Mart; Mt. Carmel Baptist Church; Freedom Baptist Church; Wendy’s of Marion; Spruce Pine Florist; Yancey Funeral Services; Webb Funeral Home; Funtime Inflatables; the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department; and all the anonymous donors who gave of their time, money, and supplies.
Under the guidance of event-directors Roy and Kim Hoyle, preparations for this event have been ongoing since last fall. With fundraisers and the dedication of many people at Liberty Hill, supplies were purchased throughout the year. Many businesses and individuals supported the BBQ fundraisers, and others simply gave donations at various times to support the children of this community.
