Cougar Football Gets First Test at Swain Friday 8-14-14

A trip to Swain County this Friday night for their only pre-season scrimmage game of the 2014 season will answer a lot of questions the Heritage coaching staff may have about their young team that enters the upcoming campaign with only three starters back on offense and four returning starters on the defensive side of the football. Cougar head coach Joey Robinson acknowledges the challenge ahead and likes what he sees so far from his group of players who quickly learned the Heritage system during camp before starting practice officially on August 1.

“We have a bunch of young guys this year but we are happy with where they are right now, “said Coach Robinson. “We had a really good camp last week and were able to put in a lot of stuff. The kids showed progress each time we hit the practice field, Robinson said.
Coach Robinson has some talented athletes stepping into leadership roles this year. At the top of the list is linebacker/running back Isaac Allen who Robinson called the “best athlete on the team.”

Robinson and the Cougars will also rely heavily on leading returning rushers Dalton Cannon and Joey Brown as well as to returning receiver E.J. Ochoa.

The big question mark is at quarterback where Coach Robinson is looking at several individuals to fill the shoes of Trevor Robinson who accounted for 2800 yards and 34 touchdowns last year.

Coach Robinson hopes to have around 35 players on the varsity roster this season after school gets going including two talent athletes, brothers Brett and Cole Burleson, who are expected to make contributions after transferring from Mitchell.

“The scrimmage game is big for us because it gives the coaches a gage to see where the team stands before we open the season and it allows the kids to hit someone other than their teammates and helps them to gain some confidence before stepping on the field for real,” Coach Robinson said.

The scrimmage gets underway at 7. p.m. in Bryson City. Heritage opens the regular season at Patton High in Morganton on August 22.
