Mitchell County Man Hikes Entire Appalachian Trail

A 63-year-old Spruce Pine man has fulfilled a lifelong dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail from south to north by summiting the 4100 foot peak of Mt. Katahdin in Maine on July 29th.  Peter King, a retired health insurance salesman, began the quest in 2007 after rehabbing from a knee injury. He hiked around 250 miles a year. King, who volunteers doing trail maintenance work with the Eastman Hiking Club, would hike 8 to 9 hours each day and meet his wife in the late afternoon and a then stay in a private campground at night.  King traveled through 14 states on his 2,168.1 mile journey which began in Springer Mountain Georgia.
