SP Rotary Recognizes Seniors

The Rotary Club of Spruce Pine recognized Mitchell High School twelfth graders Jamie Jennings and Sarah Jane McKinney at its regular meeting Thursday, January 19, as its January “Seniors of the Month.” Jennings is the daughter of Robert and Jill Jennings. She spoke to the club about how the people of Mitchell County support young people and the importance of clubs such as Rotary.
“The people of this county are very connected,” she said. “There aren’t many places left in the world that are so committed to fellowship.” At Mitchell Jennings participates in the Mitchell County Show Choir, theatre productions, student council and the Nation Honor Society.
Jennings intends to study art at Wingate University, Appalachian State or Western North Carolina and become an art therapist.
McKinney is the daughter of Joe and Connie McKinney, and granddaughter of former English teacher and Mitchell High School basketball coach Phil McKinney. McKinney participates in show choir and has been in honors classes since she was a freshman. She began taking AP classes her junior year.
“I continue to push myself daily to be the best person and student I can be,” she said. “Although it can be very difficult at times, I continue to work for my future in hopes I can inspire someone like my grandfather has done for many people in our community.” McKinney after graduation will continue her family’s tradition and attend the University of North Carolina. She plans to become a teacher.
