Mayland Community College offers free "English as a Second Language" (ESL) classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine. If you have trouble communicating, come to the classes. They will teach you how to communicate with doctors, teachers, employers and vendors; how to understand information by phone; how to help your children with homework. Classes are free for adults over 18 years. There is no child-care in the classroom.. Directions: Turn south on English Road beside Ingles grocery store. Follow the blue signs with the symbol of the church. The church is on the left. They are in the second building, next to the church in the downstairs.

The Mitchell County Board of Commissioners will meet in Special Session on Friday February 24th at 8:00am in the Commissioners' Conference Room, located in the Administration Building in Bakersville. The purpose of the meeting will be to consider the adoption of an Authorizing Resolution by the Governing Body of the Applicant; to consider the adoption of a Resolution of Support for an application to the NC Rural Center; to discuss applying for ONe NC Fund Grant; to discuss the upgrading of the Mitchell Tax Billing and Collection Systems; to hear an update and to discuss Sanitation Trucks; to hold a public hearing on applying for funding from the NC Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant Program for water and sewer infrastructure to serve a new business; to hold a budget workshop and any other business the Board deems necessary.

Richard Kennedy will give a presentation on a proposed project that is seeking investors called "Investing in Cornerstone Square: Defining 21st Century Burnsville". He will give a 20-minute slide show with suggestions on how to enhance and develop an important corner of Burnsville's Town Square, the Briggs Property including the former post office building. This presentation, which is independent of the town, will be held in the conference room at the Yancey Library on Wednesday February 29th from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

The Foundation for Mitchell County is having a party on Wednesday, February 29, the traditional
Sadie Hawkins Day, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at The Pizza Shop in Spruce Pine. Participants can win prizes in the quizzo rounds (**and the grand prize will be a pendant made by Delphia Lamberson and valued at $850, to be given to the lucky winner of a drawing. The form for the drawing can be filled out ahead of time on line at www.CFWNC.org or at the party.) Master of Ceremonies is Dr. Dan Barron, vice-chair of the Foundation for Mitchell County board. Dry County Quizmaster Alan Gratz is preparing questions on the subjects of philanthropy and Sadie Hawkins. Anyone who wants to dress up for the event will be let in free (think Daisy Mae, Li’l Abner, Mammy and Pappy Yokum). In fact, admission is free for everyone, but there is a charge for food and beverages. A portion of the sales will be returned by The Pizza Shop as a donation to The Foundation for Mitchell County. The same workshop will be offered at 9:00 am and 6:00 pm both days and will last three hours each. This workshop is designed to give participants a basic understanding of how to graft a tree (primarily apple trees). Attendees will learn several different grafting techniques as well as how to collect proper cuttings. The cost is $10.00 per person. The Family Selection Committee of Mitchell-Yancey Habitat for Humanity is hosting two informational meetings for residents in Yancey County on Tuesday February 21st and Thursday February 23rd at 6:00pm at the Burnsville First Presbyterian Church at 120 Church Street in Burnsville. The meetings are for anyone interested in applying for a Habitat Home. Those attending will be assisted in applying for a house and become a Habitat Partner. In order to qualify, you must need adequate shelter, have a job or income to make house payments every month and be willing and able to work on your house as it it being built. Attendees should bring with them their most recent pay stubs and a copy of their most recent income tax return. You will be told of other information needed when you call for an appointment. Habitat Houses are built with volunteer labor and donations and are sold to Habitat Partner Families with no profit or interest added to the mortgage. This is for families who are able to make house payments of between $350 and $400 a month. You must attend one of these meetings in order to make an application. Open auditions for the first Parkway Playhouse production of the year, the North Carolina Premiere of the comedy Mama Won’t Fly will be held on Sunday February 26 and Tuesday February 28 starting at 6:30pm. The Yancey County Cooperative Extension Service is now taking orders for several different plants for the 2012 planting season. Anyone that wants to order plants may do so at the Cooperative Extension Center located at 10 Orchard Drive during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. - 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday) or by mailing an Order Form (with payment) to Cooperative Extension Service, 10 Orchard Drive, Burnsville, NC, 28714. Forms are available at the Extension Office or online at http://yancey.ces.ncsu.edu.
Plants available: Three June Bearing strawberry varieties - Jewell, Allstar, and Earliglow and three day neutral/everbearing varieties - Seascape, Albion and Tribute. Blueberry plants; Red Raspberries; Black Raspberries; Thornless Blackberries; Asparagus (Jersey Knight, 1 yr/old crowns); and Horseradish. There are 17 Heirloom Apple Tree Varieties and two Modern Varieties: Gala and Goldrush.
Plant orders will be taken through March 26, 2012. Plants will be available for pickup on Tuesday, April 17 & Wednesday, April 18. Lisa Thomas is a local woman who resides in Spruce Pine. She is desperately searching for a kidney transplant. Her family and friends are not a match, and are dedicated to helping her find a kidney. At 50 years of age, Lisa is a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother with two children and two grandchildren who love her very much. She has been on dialysis three times per week for almost a year and is not tolerating treatments very well, staying very weak. Having a transplant will ensure her a better quality of life. Lisa's blood type is O positive and anyone with O positive or O negative blood type can be tested to see if they are a possible match. The Yancey Humane Society is pleased to announce that your dogs and cats can now be fixed for free! If your pet is 4 months or older, a rabies vaccination is required. Rabies vaccinations cost $6.00 per pet. You must be a Yancey County resident to take advantage of this special offer. You may sign up your pet at the animal shelter during hours open to the public. Those hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The animal shelter is closed Wednesdays and Sundays. The Yancey Senior Center invites you to participate in a FREE self-management workshop for people with any type of ongoing health problems. These problems may include heart disease, lung disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, overweight, fibromyalgia and others. Designed at Stanford University, research studies have shown that the workshop is extremely effective in helping people manage their health. Participation in all sessions is very important to learn better ways of coping and managing your health by: setting goals that are do-able, working with others, finding support and solutions to problems, making daily tasks easier, relaxing and managing stress and working in partnership with your health care team. The Living Healthy workshop is held for two and a half hours, once a week, for six weeks. Mars Hill College has opened ticket sales for the spring concert of the North Carolina Symphony, to take place on April 25 at 7:30 pm in Moore Auditorium. N.C. Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn will lead the Symphony in a concert including pieces by Beethoven, Liszt, Wagner and Mozart. General admission tickets to the concert are $25.
