Free English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes
Mayland Community College offers free "English as a Second Language" (ESL) classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine.  If you have trouble communicating, come to the classes. They will teach you how to communicate with doctors, teachers, employers and vendors; how to understand information by phone; how to help your children with homework. Classes are free for adults over 18 years. There is no child-care in the classroom.. Directions: Turn south on English Road beside Ingles grocery store.  Follow the blue signs with the symbol of the church. The church is on the left. They are in the second building, next to the church in the downstairs. 

Mitchell Commissioners to Meet in Special Session
The Mitchell County Board of Commissioners will meet in Special Session on Friday February 24th at 8:00am in the Commissioners' Conference Room, located in the Administration Building in Bakersville.  The purpose of the meeting will be to consider the adoption of an Authorizing Resolution by the Governing Body of the Applicant; to consider the adoption of a Resolution of Support for an application to the NC Rural Center; to discuss applying for ONe NC Fund Grant; to discuss the upgrading of the Mitchell Tax Billing and Collection Systems; to hear an update and to discuss Sanitation Trucks; to hold a public hearing on applying for funding from the NC Department of Commerce Community Development Block Grant Program for water and sewer infrastructure to serve a new business; to hold a budget workshop and any other business the Board deems necessary.

Presentation on Development of The Briggs Property
Richard Kennedy will give a presentation on a proposed project that is seeking investors called "Investing in Cornerstone Square: Defining 21st Century Burnsville".  He will give a 20-minute slide show with suggestions on how to enhance and develop an important corner of Burnsville's Town Square, the Briggs Property including the former post office building.  This presentation, which is independent of the town, will be held in the conference room at the Yancey Library on Wednesday February 29th from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

"March Into the Library" at Micaville Elementary School
Micaville Elementary School invites you to join them on March 1st as they March into the Library. The march will begin at 5:00pm with a hotdog supper that includes all the fixings for only $4.00 per person. From 5:30 to 7:00, march down the hall to find fun activities in their library and classrooms that will lead you on a journey of adventure through stories and games. Their final march will be a dance from 7:00 to 8:00pm in the gym. Don’t miss the opportunity to dance with the Cat in the Hat, and other special guests. Mark you calendars now to March into the Library on March 1st.   They would like to extend a special invitation to any preschoolers that will be coming to Micaville Elementary School next year.

Sadie Hawkins Day Quizzo Party Hosted by Foundation for Mitchell County
The Foundation for Mitchell County is having a party on Wednesday, February 29, the traditional
Sadie Hawkins Day, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at The Pizza Shop in Spruce Pine. Participants can win prizes in the quizzo rounds (**and the grand prize will be a pendant made by Delphia Lamberson and valued at $850, to be given to the lucky winner of a drawing. The form for the drawing can be filled out ahead of time on line at www.CFWNC.org or at the party.)  Master of Ceremonies is Dr. Dan Barron, vice-chair of the Foundation for Mitchell County board.  Dry County Quizmaster Alan Gratz is preparing questions on the subjects of philanthropy and Sadie Hawkins. Anyone who wants to dress up for the event will be let in free (think Daisy Mae, Li’l Abner, Mammy and Pappy Yokum). In fact, admission is free for everyone, but there is a charge for food and beverages. A portion of the sales will be returned by The Pizza Shop as a donation to The Foundation for Mitchell County.  Please call The Pizza Shop at 765-4583 by February 26 to reserve a table or a space for the Sadie Hawkins Quizzo Party. You can organize a team of up to six participants or ask to be put with a group to make up a team. Women wishing to propose to their man at the event should let the MC know in advance. Pot Luck Supper Fundraiser
The Pensacola Free Will Baptist Church Ladies Auxilary will be having a Pot Luck Supper to support the Widows Oil fund Saturday, March 3, starting at 5:00pm. Everyone is invited to attend and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Open House for Mars Hill College Master's Program
Mars Hill College Adult and Graduate Studies will host a drop-in Open House for prospective students in the Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program on March 6, from 4 until 6 pm in the lobby of Nash Hall on the campus.  The Mars Hill College master’s program has a concentration in elementary (K-6) education. Professors and administrators will be available at the event to provide general information, and to answer individual questions. Yancey Informational Meetings to Apply for a Habitat Home
The Family Selection Committee of Mitchell-Yancey Habitat for Humanity is hosting two informational meetings for residents in Yancey County on Tuesday February 21st and Thursday February 23rd at 6:00pm at the Burnsville First Presbyterian Church at 120 Church Street in Burnsville.  The meetings are for anyone interested in applying for a Habitat Home.  Those attending will be assisted in applying for a house and become a Habitat Partner.  In order to qualify, you must need adequate shelter, have a job or income to make house payments every month and be willing and able to work on your house as it it being built.  Attendees should bring with them their most recent pay stubs and a copy of their most recent income tax return.  You will be told of other information needed when you call for an appointment.  Habitat Houses are built with volunteer labor and donations and are sold to Habitat Partner Families with no profit or interest added to the mortgage.  This is for families who are able to make house payments of between  $350 and $400 a month.  You must attend one of these meetings in order to make an application.  To attend or register or get more information call 828-766-9000 on or before Monday February 13th.

Parkway Playhouse Open Auditions
Open auditions for the first Parkway Playhouse production of the year, the North Carolina Premiere of the comedy Mama Won’t Fly will be held on Sunday February 26 and Tuesday February 28 starting at 6:30pm. The production, calls for a cast of 2 men aged 20 and up and 6 women aged 20 and up. Audition for the six remaining productions are posted on the Parkway Playhouse website at
www.parkwayplayhouse.com.  Potential actors who are interested in being considered for a role at the Parkway Playhouse need to attend the open auditions that will be held for each show. Additionally, the Parkway Playhouse will be attending the WNC Theatre League Auditions held in Asheville on February 24 and 25 at the AB Tech Campus. All audition information, including cast requirements for each show can be found on the Parkway Playhouse website. No appointment or experience is necessary for the open auditions. Actors who are interested in attending the WNC Theatre League Auditions should visit the WNC Theatre League Auditions website at http://www.unifiedauditions.org/ for more information.  People with an interest in production/”backstage” work are encouraged to come to the auditions and make their interest known. There are opportunities to assist with scenery, props, lighting/sound, and costumes. No experience is required. Intermountain Head Start Currently Recruiting Preschool Children

Fast Food Pantry for the Needy in Mitchell County
Residents in Mitchell County that are in need of food are invited to stop by The Food Pantry at The Bridge, formerly PInebridge, in Spruce Pine, open every other Saturday from 8:30am-10:00am.  This is a ministry of The Bridge Church.  Pastor Tom Anglin welcome all needy Mitchell County residents.

Hospice of Yancey Needs Volunteers
Hospice of Yancey County is seeking individuals to volunteer with patients in their private homes and in local nursing facilities. Volunteers spend time reading, recording stories, or just provide a listening ear to our patients. Volunteers may also provide a time for exhausted caregivers to be able to run errands or have some time to take a much needed break. Yancey Youth League Fundraiser
The Yancey Youth League is selling the Energy Efficient Light Bulbs donated by French Broad Electric.  They are $5.00 for a 4 pack box of bulbs. They are the 13 Watt which is equalivant to the 60 Watt Bulb.  The bulbs are currently  for sale at State Employees Credit Union, Yancey Journal, J&T Construction, Yancey Water & Soil Office, Tap Photography, and Yancey Graphics. 

Adopt a Resident: New Program at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care
Brookside Rehabilitation and Care is starting a new volunteer program called Adopt a Resident. This program is to provide a one on one relationship between the volunteer and the resident, with a specific goal to have residents without family members to have a special volunteer to visit with them. A representative from Brookside will be happy to speak to your Church, Civic Group or on an individual basis about this program. Yancey Cooperative Extension Plant Sale Underway
The Yancey County Cooperative Extension Service is now taking orders for several different plants for the 2012 planting season.  Anyone that wants to order plants may do so at the Cooperative Extension Center located at 10 Orchard Drive during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. - 5:00p.m. Monday through Friday) or by mailing an Order Form (with payment) to Cooperative Extension Service, 10 Orchard Drive, Burnsville, NC, 28714. Forms are available at the Extension Office or online at http://yancey.ces.ncsu.edu.
    Plants available: Three June Bearing strawberry varieties - Jewell, Allstar, and Earliglow and three day neutral/everbearing varieties - Seascape, Albion and Tribute.  Blueberry plants; Red Raspberries; Black Raspberries; Thornless Blackberries; Asparagus (Jersey Knight, 1 yr/old crowns); and Horseradish.  There are 17 Heirloom Apple Tree Varieties and two Modern Varieties: Gala and Goldrush.
     Plant orders will be taken through March 26, 2012. Plants will be available for pickup on Tuesday, April 17 & Wednesday, April 18. Benefit for the Ryan Coates Family
There will be a benefit February 25th at Madison High School for the Ryan Coates family. 100% of all proceeds will be given to the family to help with Ryan's medical expenses in his fight against cancer.  It begins at 4 pm with food, (**raffles), silent auction, live music, cake walk, fun inflatables, face painting and more. Preschool Movement Class
Graham Children's Health Services will present Preschool Movement Class Thursdays at 10:00am at The Old Burnsville Gym beginning Thursday February 2nd.  In this 45-minute class for pre-school aged children they will dance, tumble, exercise and play.  They invite you to join them for a chance to burn off energy these winter months and meet other children.  Parents must accompany their child.  This class will be be held instead of their usual Wednesday play group.  To register call 682-7899.

Youth Group Volleyball Nights

Local Woman in Need of a Kidney Transplant
Lisa Thomas is a local woman who resides in Spruce Pine. She is desperately searching for a kidney transplant. Her family and friends are not a match, and are dedicated to helping her find a kidney. At 50 years of age, Lisa is a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother with two children and two grandchildren who love her very much. She has been on dialysis three times per week for almost a year and is not tolerating treatments very well, staying very weak. Having a transplant will ensure her a better quality of life. Lisa's blood type is O positive and anyone with O positive or O negative blood type can be tested to see if they are a possible match. Workshops for NC Foreclosure Prevention Fund
Financial help is available for North Carolina homeowners who are struggling to pay their mortgages because they’ve lost their jobs or experienced other temporary hardship.  OnTrack WNC is hosting intake workshops on Thursday, January 19, 2012, Thursday, February 16 2012, and Thursday, March 15 from 6:00PM-7:30PM in Burnsville at Higgins United Methodist Church at 101 N Main Street, Burnsville, NC 28714. The program workshop is the first, mandatory step in applying for the loan fund.  Workshop preregistration is required. Yancey Residents can Have Pets Fixed for Free!
The Yancey Humane Society is pleased to announce that your dogs and cats can now be fixed for free! If your pet is 4 months or older, a rabies vaccination is required. Rabies vaccinations cost $6.00 per pet. You must be a Yancey County resident to take advantage of this special offer. You may sign up your pet at the animal shelter during hours open to the public. Those hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The animal shelter is closed Wednesdays and Sundays. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Class
The next Arthritis Foundation Exercise Class will begin on Monday, February 27th, 2012 at 10:30 am and it will be held at the Blue Ridge Fitness & Rehabilitation Center – Yancey Campus. Pre-registration for the exercise program is necessary and enrollment is limited. The registration deadline is Friday, February 24th. For more information contact Cindi Renfro at 682-6011 ext. 15. This Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program can help you better manage your arthritis pain. Developed by physical therapists specifically for people with arthritis, this low-impact, joint-safe exercise program has been documented to help decrease arthritis pain and relieve stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. Before starting any exercise program, always check with your physician.

Free Health Self-Management Workshop
The Yancey Senior Center invites you to participate in a FREE self-management workshop for people with any type of ongoing health problems. These problems may include heart disease, lung disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, overweight, fibromyalgia and others. Designed at Stanford University, research studies have shown that the workshop is extremely effective in helping people manage their health. Participation in all sessions is very important to learn better ways of coping and managing your health by: setting goals that are do-able, working with others, finding support and solutions to problems, making daily tasks easier, relaxing and managing stress and working in partnership with your health care team. The Living Healthy workshop is held for two and a half hours, once a week, for six weeks. The next workshop is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 at 10:00 am and it will be held at the Blue Ridge Fitness & Rehabilitation Center. Tickets on Sale for Spring Concert with North Carolina Sypmhony
Mars Hill College has opened ticket sales for the spring concert of the North Carolina Symphony, to take place on April 25 at 7:30 pm in Moore Auditorium. N.C. Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn will lead the Symphony in a concert including pieces by Beethoven, Liszt, Wagner and Mozart. General admission tickets to the concert are $25. Patron tickets are $100, and include special seating, as well as a post-concert reception with the maestro and musicians.

Have you lost a loved one to cancer? Have you survived cancer yourself? Or are you simply hoping to help people get healthy? Join us in the fight against cancer by becoming a Community Health Advisor (CHA) Volunteer! CHA Volunteers will positively impact breast, cervical and colon cancer awareness and access to screenings in order to reduce the number of breast, cervical and colon cancer incidences in Yancey County women that are at great risk for the disease. If you have a passion for helping others we will train you to be a CHA Volunteer. You will learn the basics about cancer and health disparities. You will discover community resources to help women get screened for cancer. We will give you the tools to help saves lives in your community. Donations Needed for the Johnny Crain Family

Food Drive to Feed the Homeless and Needy Families
The Oak Tree Store, located at 462 Oak Street in Spruce Pine, is accepting donations of all non-perishable food items and is asking for members of the community to help them feed the homeless and needy families.  The food drive is sponsored the the Christ is Hope Foundation.

Cleaning for a Reason
If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning - once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment. Pet Adopters Needed
The Yancey Humane Society is overflowing with homeless dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. They range all sizes, shapes, and ages. Help spread the word that these innocent ones need loving homes.
