Update on Yancey Flooding

Jeff Howell the Emergency Services Director for Yancey County Reports on Yancey Flooding

As incredible as it may sound, Yancey County roads are open and have apparently received little damage. DOT Bridge crews will be inspecting the bridges throughout the day. Thankfully, the remainder of the week looks like it will be dry with only 10-30% chance of rain.

Cane River Park seems to have received the most damage. I haven’t been out there yet and quite honestly, I’m not sure I want to. The pictures and videos that I have seen are pretty devastating. That one will take a lot of work to rebuild, but it’s nothing we haven’t done before.

Rain totals that have been reported in the South Toe and Pensacola areas range from 5-11″. According to the official gauge, Mt Mitchell received 14.42″ since the event began. Both Cane River and South Toe have receded quite a bit and are well under flood stage.

FBEMC worked well into the night to restore power to the folks in the Pensacola area and have all but 29 back in service. Duke Power is reporting no outages at this time.

Although the State of Emergency is still in effect, the curfew has expired and at this time there are no plans to re-instate it.
