How To Report Storm Damage in Yancey County

Yancey County Emergency Services Director Jeff Howell has released the following statement: Please understand there is no guarantee that you will receive any amount of assistance from FEMA regardless of the extent of your damage. If FEMA does declare a disaster AND Yancey County qualifies, it could take many months before you receive compensation.

If you have damages to private property such as roads, bridges, structures, or loss of personal property as a result of the flood event on September 16th, 2018, please contact this office at (828)678-9266 or email at yanceycountyem@gmail.com. Include your name, address, phone number, and an email address. It is not a problem if you don’t have an email address, but it will help greatly in sending and receiving documents.

It is critical to take pictures of the damage and maintain all receipts for any repairs that are completed before FEMA makes the decision to declare the area a disaster. FEMA will evaluate the total of all damages to individual property (private roads, bridges, structures, and equipment) separate from that of public property (streets, water, sewer, power lines, and tax payer provided facilities).

Again, there is no guarantee that you will receive any amount of assistance from FEMA regardless of the extent of your damage. If FEMA does declare a disaster AND Yancey County qualifies, it could take many months before you receive compensation.
