The NC DOT is reporting that the unpaved section of S.R.- 1566/Peppers Creek Road is closed due to a train derailment that occurred around 11 a.m. yesterday. The road is closed from the end of pavement to the Mitchell County Line.
According to a CSX representative a westbound freight train derailed four cars. There were no injuries to the crew. The four cars that derailed and rolled down a hill were transporting a hazardous material that has been contained.
Local authorities also confirmed an active ammonium nitrate spill, saying there is no threat to public safety, and there were no injuries reported.
