Authorities have issued a voluntary evacuation notice for an apartment complex off Westwood Chateau Drive in Marion because of a sinkhole. Around 40 residents of the building were busy yesterday moving out.
Some unsettling of the buildings was first noticed during the summer. At first, they thought it was a structural problem, but after hiring a geotechnical engineer, they discovered it was much worse.
The private engineer firm performed tests and recommended residents living in the complex be relocated immediately because of the potential of sinkhole formation and potential structure collapse.
They are working to determine whether there is an issue with the infrastructure of the piping from the drainage of the lake or if there is underground seepage from the dam.
Local and state officials will work together to determine what will happen with the property and if it needs to be condemned.
