Yancey County Register of Deeds Alerts Citizens to Possible Scam

Yancey County Register of Deeds Susan Jobe wants to alert Yancey County citizens to beware of the following company:

PROPERTY  PROFILE INC

449 W Foothill Blvd #519

Glendora, CA  91741

Phone:  1-888-411-7842

Property Profile Inc is mailing a “RECORDED  DEED NOTICE” to property owners instructing them to send a service fee of $86 within a certain deadline date in order to obtain a current grant deed and property assessment  profile.

In the past, there have been other companies  with similar schemes trying to obtain exorbitant amounts of money for copies that a homeowner  can obtain for free via the Register of Deeds website.

In addition to this information being available online for free, a person could request a certified copy of a deed if they need it for official or legal purposes. The cost to obtain a certified copy of a deed is $5 for the first page and $2 for each additional page. Often, a deed is only one or two pages.  (A plain copy is available at the cost of a quarter per page.)

Citizens please beware of this mailing and understand that it did not come from the Yancey County Register of Deeds Office, which maintains these recorded deeds and which are accessible to the public for free via our website.

The website address is: www.yanceydeeds.com

“I am concerned  with our elderly citizens being scared by this notice and sending money for something  that is not necessary. Although the mailing does contain wording that “this is a solicitation  and not a bill”, I have been contacted by some of our citizens who think my office sent this to them and that they are required to respond, said Jobe, “If the public needs assistance in obtaining a copy of their deed, they can contact the Yancey County Register of Deeds Office for assistance. If you are ever in doubt, please call or come by my office.  The land records recorded and maintained at the Register of Deeds Office are public record so it is not necessary  to pay a company to be able to see a copy of a deed. The Attorney General’s Office has instituted legal action in past situations to prevent other companies from mailing similar notices to North Carolina property owners. If a citizen receives a similar mailing or if they know of citizens who paid money to this company, they can contact the NC Department  of Justice at (919) 716-6000.”
