Grant Awarded To Yancey County Sheriff Office

A Byrne Justice Assistance Grant for 2018 has been awarded to the Yancey County Sheriff Office.

This is a federally funded Grant that awards funds to the State of North Carolina through the Governor’s Crime Commission (GCC). These funds are then applied for by non-profits and Law Enforcement Agencies to assist funding in such areas as, but not limited to, equipment upgrades, programs, and special investigative Units.

This year’s Grant was written to upgrade the Sheriff’s Office’s aging inventory of service Shotguns with semi-automatic Shotguns equipped with rail mounted flashlights. The funding, $24,473.99, is available and the Grant is active through September 2020.

“This Grant is greatly appreciated and helps me in managing the overall Sheriff’s Office budget while ensuring our Deputies are issued the most improved and up to date equipment to keep our citizens and our Deputies safe while performing their duties. We are awaiting approval of our 2019 Grant application for the next calendar year.” said Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard.

The past four consecutive year’s awards have been used for Internet Crimes Against Child (ICAC) Training and equipment, an upgrade of obsolete Tasers, a less lethal weapon, a much needed Computer Server upgrade, Special duel shot Tasers and Safety Equipment and training for our Detention Staff, and Firearms for our Armed Detention Staff that transport Inmates to and from NCDPS Prison facilities and outside the Facility Medical appointments and Hospital Care.This year’s Grant was written to upgrade the Sheriff’s Office ageing inventory of Tasers and to upgrade personal safety Equipment for the Special Response Team (SRT) Members.

The funding, $24,490.10, is available and the Grant is active through September 2019.
