Overmountain Shelter in Avery County Closed

Overmountain Shelter in Avery County has been closed due to structural damage. The Appalachian Ranger District has tried their best to maintain the structure, but they have determined it is no longer safe. The shelter was originally on a private farm but was converted into a trail shelter for the Appalachian Trail by the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club. People have enjoyed camping inside the old barn, but the barn was not originally designed to host campers. The fields around the shelter are open for camping, but hikers are asked to stay at least 40 feet away from the barn.
