Busy Night for Yancey County Commissioners

It was a busy evening for Yancey County commissioners on Monday, October 14th as they faced a packed courtroom and many people who signed up to make comments on a variety of subjects. Commissioners began by handling several areas of business including the approval of $5000 to go with matching amounts from the Yancey Chamber of Commerce and the Yancey County Economic Development Commission to upgrade the Tech Center in Burnsville.

They received an update on the Cane River Park lighting project that is underway and voted to let the schools do what they want with the old schools.

Commissioners also signed a proclamation for Red Ribbon Week.

Rhonda Boone presented a proposed Animal Ordinance. Rebuttal comments are scheduled to be heard at next month’s meeting. However, several people were at this meeting to comment on the ordinance including NC House Representative Michele Presnell who felt that it would impact bear hunting. Anthony Robinson spoke in opposition as did several others. Several of the hunters felt that there were already plenty of state laws without adding additional ones. Kristi Bailey said that the ordinance would not affect hunters.

Michele Presnell stated her approval of the recent commissioners vote on the “Resolution For Life”, naming Yancey County as a sanctuary for the unborn. Freddy Penland also stated his approval. Heather Dolls and others questioned the amendment. Diana Blanchard wanted to hear more about the recent hacking of the county finance department. The next meeting of the Yancey County Commissioners is scheduled for Tuesday, November the 12th.
