N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is reporting that a Mitchell County man was bitten by a black bear while sitting in his driveway last Saturday.
He was sitting outdoors at dusk when a mama bear and her cub came through his front yard. The homeowner’s Great Dane became engaged in a fight with the mama bear.
The homeowner was bitten on his left forearm defending himself from the bear just before the bear ran away. The victim drove himself to the hospital and was treated and released the same night. The dog also suffered puncture wounds and was treated at an emergency animal hospital and released that night.
In any type of incident involving humans and wildlife, the responding officers and wildlife biologists try to take DNA samples to keep on file as a record of bear’s DNA in case it ever becomes a “problem bear” in the future.
