Leon Nickson Hughes

Leon Hughes, 57, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2019, at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Tallahassee, FL and spent his early years in Gainesville, FL, later moving to Live Oak, FL.

Lee is the eldest son of Glenda McCullers McDonald Hughes and the late Leon Nickson McDonald, Jr., and the adopted son of Alfred Lloyd Hughes, Jr.

Lee loved life and was grateful for every day God allowed him to be here on earth.  An automobile accident left him a quadriplegic in 1986.  He recovered quite well and went on to attend Tallahassee Community College, and Florida State University, where he received his B.S. degree in Social Work.  Lee was always up for the challenge in spite of his disability.  He grew up with a love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing, canoe trips and camping along the Suwanee River.  He was once active in tutoring young children in reading and mathematics.  He was an avid history buff, especially Civil War history, and enjoyed coin collecting and firearms.  Lee loved the Lord and did his best to share God’s love whenever the opportunity arose.  He supported Dr. Charles Stanley’s “In Touch Ministries” and attended church services via television on Sunday morning with his mother by his side.

Surviving, in addition to his mother and adoptive father, are his brothers:  Greg Hughes and wife, Mary Beth, and Timothy Hughes, both of Burnsville, and Jeremiah Hughes and wife, Tina, of Raleigh; and a sister:  Sally McDonald of Asheville.  Several nieces, nephews, a great niece and two great nephews and cousins also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7PM Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.

The body will be returned to Live Oak, FL for service and burial under the direction of Daniels Funeral Home in Live Oak.
