Bowman 5th and 6th Graders Visit Mitchell High CTE Classes

Career and technical education classes are designed to directly prepare students for high-wage and high-demand careers. Unlike other classes, CTE centers on hands-on learning in many different fields, including health care, information technology, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and horticulture, automotive, drafting, welding and many more.   Fifth and sixth grade students from Bowman Middle School received a firsthand look at these classes on Friday, November 22nd.

The trip began with a group meeting led by Denise Murphy, Career Development Counselor at Mitchell High School.  Mrs. Murphy explained CTE classes to the students and divided them into groups led by high school students.  Each group toured ten different CTE classes.  This was an eye opening visit for the students as well as some of the teachers.  Many were unaware of all of the different types of opportunities that were available at the high school.  This trip not only gave them a glimpse into their future but allowed them to meet the teachers.  They saw students that they knew personally working.  Both the teachers and the students talked to the middle schoolers about the classes and the type of real-world experience that was involved.  This gave the younger students a unique perspective on each class.   The students were interested in the numerous certifications that were available to our high school students, especially the ones that were recognized in industry and prepared the students to go straight into a career.  They were also intrigued by the classes that gave both high school and college credit.

After the visit, the students were more excited about going to high school and all of the different types of classes that are offered.  Many of these students want to remain local and follow in their parents footsteps.  Career and Technical education classes can make this possible.
