High Peaks Trail Assoc. Receives Top Honor From NC State Parks

The NC High Peaks Trail Association received a top honor on January 16th from the NC State Parks System.  The award was given for exemplary contributions to NC State Parks’ mission of stewardship, public service and education. One of the group’s major contributions was to apply for and administer three grants worth $60,000 from the NC Division of Parks and Recreation for improvements on the Mt Mitchell Trail. The six mile trail running from Black Mountain Campground to the summit of Mt Mitchell is the main route for hikers who want to climb the tallest mountain in the eastern United States. High Peaks also installed a state of the art weather station at the park that includes real-time information and video.

The club also helped the park purchase and install equipment to broadcast emergency road closures and other frequently asked information for Park visitors on a low power AM channel.  For more information about High Peaks go to their website nchighpeaks.org or check their Facebook page.
