Vacant Spot To Become Garden Plot

A vacant spot next to Riverside Park in Spruce Pine will soon become a garden plot. The Spruce Pine Town Council unanimously approved the idea of taking the land that was previously used by a trailer park and turning it over to a group of citizens who want to plant a garden. Volunteers hope to grow the garden and partner with local groups like Shephard’s Staff and Neighbors Feeding Neighbors to distribute the vegetables to those who need them, much like the Community Garden project in Yancey County. Florence Grant, one of the project’s organizers, gave her vision at the town meeting as the project being a source of fresh food which will lead to healthier lives.  Grant said they are exploring funding sources. Grant said she was not at the meeting asking for money but rather just hoped to secure use of the property.
