Michael Avery Grindstaff

Michael Avery Grindstaff, age 65, of Spruce Pine died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, March 31, 2020

A native of Mitchell County born January 13, 1955 he was the son of the late Avery and Nellie Reed Grindstaff. He is also proceeded in death by his wife whom he loved dearly, and were married for 18 years Kay Grindstaff and a sister Helen Pyatte.

Mike was a caring and loving person who always went out of his way to help others. He loved life and was a hard worker. He owned Altapass Store and Restaurant for years. He was later employed by Ingles and loved his job there and the friends he made there. He recently retired from the Avery/Mitchell prison and made several friends that were like family to him. To them he was Mike Grindstaff, he was “Grinder”. These men became more like family to Mike.

He loved playing golf, fishing, being outdoors and loved his animals. He was always doing some new project after he retired.

Left to cherish his memories are 2 sisters Lynda Wright of Conover, NC & Edith Pullian of Troy, VA. A cousin who was more like a brother Ronnie Grindstaff, a step daughter; Heather Simmons and husband Dana, neighbors that were basically family Tony and Laura Pittman sons; Cole and Kyle, cousin Tuesday Byrd and husband Bill daughters; Savannah and Maddie and his extended family Mike and Rita Phillips, niece Brandy Phillips and her son Devin Randolph.

A private graveside service will be held at Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery at 12:00 noon, on Saturday, April 4, 2020.  Rev. Matthew “Vern” Grindstaff officiating.

In lieu of flowers we are asking for any donations to help pay the expenses of Mike’s funeral.
