Dorothy Smith

Dorothy Smith, age 91, of Smith Road in Spruce Pine, died Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation  of Spruce Pine.

Born on February 7, 1929 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Jeter Lee and Effie Buchanan Sparks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Beauford Smith who passed away in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her sons; Larry and Chris Smith, her daughter; Debbie Morris, her great granddaughter; Natasha Hullett, and her sisters; Peggy Sparks, Marjorie Townsend, Louise Aldridge, Betty Jo Burleson, Agnes Forbes, and Anna Mae Wilson.

Dorothy was a member of the Pine Branch Baptist Church and was a daughter in Christ. She treasured spending time with her family and was a dearly loved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She taught her children and grandchildren how to make homemade biscuits and she enjoyed this the most. In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her beautiful flowers. During her working career, she was employed by the Mitchell County Schools, Henredon Furniture, and Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Spruce Pine where she worked in the food service departments.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter-in-law; Loretta Runion and husband, Mike of Spruce Pine, Michelle Boone and husband, Barry of Spruce Pine; Renee Currin and husband, Jon of Henderson; Vanessa Smith and Dale of Spruce Pine; Trae Strickland of Henderson; Bradley Smith and wife, Summer of Spruce Pine; Jessica Holt of Albemarle; and Kristen Whitson and husband, DJ of Mars Hill; fourteen great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren; her brothers; Bruce Sparks and wife, Marie of Spruce Pine and Gary Sparks of Spruce Pine; and her sister; Wanda Perkinson of Henderson, NC.

Private funeral services for Dorothy Smith will be on Saturday, May 9, 2020 in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev’s Steve Williams and Gary Sparks officiating. Interment will be in the Pine Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a ‘Special Thank You’ to Loretta Runion for her care, commitment, and concern for Dorothy for many years. The family would also like to extend a special ‘Thank You’ to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge for their wonderful care of Dorothy.
