Bessie Hughes Butler, age 89 of Swannanoa, passed away Friday, November 6th, 2020 at Mission Hospital. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Dullie Melinda Briggs Hughes.
She was a retired employee of the Asheville Veterans Administration Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Butler who died in 1974; brothers, Gib Hughes (Dorothy) and James Hughes (Betty Mae); sisters, Nancy Laws (Bill), Kathleen McMahan (Carmel), Dorothy Pruitt (Pee – Wee), Ollie Justice (Adam), Mona Lee Stamey (Lee) and Osie Monteath (Don).
Surviving are her son, Edward Butler and wife Lisa of Swannanoa. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 11th at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers. The family will receive friends and family two hours prior to service. Burial will be held in the Pete Young Cemetery in Burnsville.
