YCS Classroom Closure Due to Exposure

YANCEY COUNTY SCHOOLS PRESS RELEASE

All Yancey County School System Staff, Students, Parents, and Guardians:
Our commitment is to keep each of you informed of our efforts to maintain the safest learning environments possible. We received information yesterday afternoon from the YC Health Department that a 5th employee at Burnsville Elementary tested positive for COVID within the two week window, which means we have our first cluster reported in YCS. All of the BES employees who were quarantined for possible community exposure have returned to work on Monday, November 30, except for one employee. That person is still recovering at home.

We are proceeding with the highest level of caution while working under the recommendations of the Yancey County Health Department. At Micaville Elementary School, we have quarantined a second grade classroom due to positive COVID tests. We continue to monitor the situation closely at MES, in case we need to take any further actions. After discussions with the YCS Health Team and the YC Health Department, quarantining the classroom is the appropriate protocol at this point in time.

Any students or staff members who may have come in contact with a person who has tested positive have been notified by the school administration or the Yancey County Health
Department. We will continue to follow safety protocols and work in partnership with the Yancey County Health Department to ensure a safe learning environment is maintained
throughout our school system.

We will also continue to monitor the situation in our community throughout the next three weeks and update you if there are any changes at any of our other schools. The current YCS active case numbers listed are from 11/30/20 at 5:05 pm: Elementary students – 2, Middle School students – 3, High School students – 1, and Employees – 4. This is a total of 10 active cases out of 2,400 students, faculty and staff. The active case numbers change hourly and daily from the YC Health Department.

Thank you for your patience and please take care of yourselves as we continue to work through this public health crisis each week.

Sincerely,
Kathy Amos
Superintendent of Yancey County Schools
