Pearl Wilcox Penland, age 86, of the Horton Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 31st, 2020 at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Calvin and Vena Buchanan Wilcox, and husband of the late Wayne B. Penland who passed away in 2015. She was preceded in death by her sisters: Edith Parker, Lois England and Doris Welch; brothers: Lonnie, Clyde, Sam, and Johnny Wilcox. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to spend time with her family. Pearl enjoyed working in her garden, canning and caring for others. She was a faithful member of Riverside Baptist Church.
Surviving is her daughter, Angie Benfield and husband, James, of Horton Creek and a grandson, James Benfield, II of Boston, MA and a sister, Elizabeth Pate and husband, JD of Burnsville also several cousins survive.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, January 4, 2021 in the Penland Cemetery on Horton Creek. Rev. Tommy Murphy will officiate.
