The Town of Spruce Pine wants to apply for a $100,000 matching grant to make improvements on Brad Ragan Park. Cost of the project would be $200,000 with a grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund providing half the amount needed for the renovations. If the grant is approved it would allow the town to build up other parts of Bad Ragan Park besides the pool. To further utilize the park the plans are to construct a mountain bike/walking trail, renovate the double tennis court, change the single tennis court to a pickle ball court, update the basketball court, picnic shelter and playground area and incorporate a dog park. If the grant does not come there would be a scaled back version. The Northwest NC Mountain Bike Alliance is also continuing its own fundraising for a beginners mountain bike trail at the park. The decision to apply for the $100,000 North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant requires a public hearing which is set for March 22 at 5:45 pm.
