Fred Ray Self, age 83, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2021 at the Huntersville Health & Rehabilitation Center in Huntersville, NC.
Born on December 27, 1937 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Fred Burgin and Dollie McKinney Self. Fred Ray was also preceded in death by his wife; Rita Hoke Self, his sisters; Alma McKinney and Ellie McKinney, and brothers; Jake, Cecil, Harold and Gene Self.
Fred Ray was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Charlotte. He retired from the Postal Service after 21 years of service. He loved his family and friends and was very much a people person. Fred Ray liked to travel, enjoyed southern gospel music, talking on the phone and sending cards of encouragements. Fred Ray was a veteran of the U.S. Army for which he very proudly served.
Left to cherish his memories are his sisters in laws; Barbara Self and Georgia Self both of Spruce Pine and Betty Powell and husband Gary of Claremont, NC. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A time to support the family, share memories, and receive friends will be Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. The memorial service will be on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at 4:00 pm at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Self officiating.
There will be a private burial held at a later date.
