Update on Heritage Principal

Mountain Heritage Principal Kevin Huskins has released this statement in regards to his employment contract: “I have received communication from the YCS Board of Education and Superintendent Kathy Amos regarding a 4 year contract extension, I appreciate their support and look forward to the opportunity to continue working with the students, faculty, parents and community of Yancey County. We are Heritage.”

Both sides came to an agreement over their differing issues Tuesday evening and Huskins made the announcement at a faculty meeting on Wednesday.  Superintendent Amos will recommend the employment agreement to the Board of Education and the Board then has to vote to award the contract in order for it to be official. That recommendation and vote is expected to happen at the next regular Board meeting on May 17th.

Although many speculated that the change in the Homecoming event was an issue in relation to Huskins’ contract renewal, to clarify the matter Chairman of the Yancey County Board of Education Edwin Fortner issued the following statement on Wednesday,   “As many are aware, this year’s homecoming festivities at Mountain Heritage High School saw a change from the traditional crowning of a homecoming court to an event honoring local heroes known as “Be the Good.” The change has led to much discussion in local media outlets and social media, including speculation regarding the role of the Yancey County School Board in the event. For the record, the Yancey County Board of Education has taken no position, either approving or disapproving, regarding the homecoming festivity changes.”
