On Wednesday night, April 21st at 9:10 pm South Toe Fire & Rescue had just completed a response to a chimney fire located off White Oak Road in Yancey County when they were called out to a fire on Grandmother’s Lane which is off Lower Browns Creek Road. A wooden open garage type structure had caught fire. It proceeded to engulf the structure and catch the surrounding woods on fire. Extremely heavy winds also threatened to catch a doublewide mobile home and another large wooded area on fire. The local South Toe Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, along with Newdale, Burnsville, and Spruce Pine Fire departments, battled the flames until they were able to get them extinguished around 11 pm. Parkway Fire and Rescue from Spruce Pine also responded and set up a water point at Grindstaff Road bridge to keep the other fire trucks supplied. South Toe Fire & Rescue, a 100% volunteer fire department, thanked the other fire departments, Yancey County Fire Marshal Neil
