Another Scam in the Area

Another scam seems to be going around our area. According to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department you should be aware of reports of victims receiving calls from supposed “Apple employees” attempting to scam them out of money.

One caller told the resident that her Apple account was suspended, and he needed her credit card information to unlock it. Another offered a McDowell woman Apple anti-virus software and advised her to purchase Apple gift cards for him to activate it.

McDowell County Sheriff Ricky Buchanan says to, get the full name and a phone number and tell them you will call them back. Don’t let them intimidate you on the phone. Stop, slow down and demand some answers from them. Capt. Shanon Smith said, “Anytime anyone asks you to purchase gift cards that’s a sure sign that it’s a scam.”

Anyone with questions or concerns is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 828-652-2235.
