Anna Lee Hall McKinney

Anna Lee Hall McKinney, age 81, of the Penland area in Bakersville, NC passed away on Monday, July 12, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Anna was born on August 9, 1939 in Bakersville and grew up on her family’s farm on Roses Branch Road, and attended Bowman High School. She married and moved to Minneapolis, MN for eight years where her first three children were born. Upon returning to NC, she lived near Spruce Pine, in Elk Park, and in Newland. Anna is known as Ann by her friends, Anna Lee by her family, Mom by her children and those she mothered, Maw-maw by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and Sweetie by her husband.

On August 26, 1977, Anna married the love of her life and they had three children. Anna was a homemaker whose great joy was caring for family – which included anyone who came into her home. She was a caregiver whose love knew no bounds. She provided loving care for her maternal grandmother, as well as her younger sisters Rosa and Sue toward the end of their lives. She is known for her love of flowers, flower gardening, and bird feeding. She had a great love of animals, especially birds. Redbirds held symbolic meaning for her, and she anticipated the return of her hummingbirds each Spring with prepared nectar feeders. Anna was a woman who was deeply rooted in Christian faith from an early age.

She was preceded in death by her parents David S. and Edith (Canipe) Hall. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son DeWayne McKinney, and siblings Mallie Hall, Virginia McBee, Edna Robertson, David Samuel “D.S.” Hall, Buster Hall, Mary Sue Stewart, and Rosa Hall.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband Wayne E. McKinney; her children Debra “Dae” Evans (Pete) of Wooster OH, Cindy Gragg (John) of Hudson NC, David “Butch” Evans (Gracie) of Hudson NC, Sherry Stamey (Mike) of Elk Park NC, Terry McKinney (Gina) of Newland NC; her sister Doris Jones (Bill) of Spruce Pine NC; her brother Dave “Junior” Hall (Sabra) of Spruce Pine NC; her nine grandchildren: Josh Gragg (Shannan), Gabe Gragg (Heather), Matt Gragg (Lacie), Beth Rodden (Tyler), David Evans (Kinley), Brandy Buchanan, and Abby McKinney; her nine great-grandchildren: Hunter Gragg, Zoe & Allie Parris, Madison, Cali & Grant Gragg, Maddux & Myles Gragg, and Levi Rodden; and her many beloved nieces and nephews. Anna was known for her unconditional love and held a special place in her heart for everyone she knew.

A time to support the family, share memories, and receive friends will be on Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 1:00 pm until 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine, NC. The funeral service will immediately follow at the same location with Pastor Steve Williams and Chaplain Andy Willis officiating. Interment will be at the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Blue Ridge in Spruce Pine, NC, who assisted the family with excellent care.
