Yancey Sheriff’s Dept Receives Grant for New SRT Vests

Yancey County Sheriff’s Office received A Byrne Justice Assistance Grant for the purchase of new tactical body armor to better equip the Special Response Team, or SRT, for any high risk situation they may be called into.

Yancey County Sheriff’s Office SRT team is specially trained for rapid deployment into some of the most dangerous situations.  Because of the potential of being in harm’s way, the SRT team requires the best and most efficient equipment to prevent injury or loss of life.

This is a federally funded Grant that awards funds to the State of North Carolina through the Governor’s Crime Commission (GCC). These funds are then applied for by non-profits and Law Enforcement Agencies to assist funding in such areas as, but not limited to, equipment upgrades, programs, and special investigative units.

“This equipment is not something we use on a daily basis, but it is something that when the need arises, we need the best equipment we can have,” said Chief Deputy Shane Hilliard.   “The purchase of this equipment with funds from the grant helps me in managing the overall Sheriff’s Office budget while ensuring our team is issued the most improved and up to date equipment.”
