Mitchell County Transportation will use a $100,000 grant to fund a new “fixed route” in Spruce Pine. The grant from the National Rural Transit Community Rides Program, will increase mobility and access and help prevent people from having to walk long distances on a dangerous highway. Mitchell County Transportation got the maximum possible amount on this grant. They were one of only 19 projects that were approved out of 76 nationwide applications. Mitchell County Transportation Director Sheila Blalock said the exact Spruce Pine route will be announced at a later date.
