Bessie Lou Hunter Buchanan

Bessie Lou Hunter Buchanan, age 80 of Burnsville, passed away Friday, October 1st, 2021 at home surrounded by her family. A native of Yancey County, she was born October 31st, 1940 to the late Claude and Flossie Bradford Hunter. She was also preceded in death by brothers: CL Hunter, JD Hunter, and Claude Hunter, Jr.; sisters: Lydia Holt and Pansey Hensley.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Dennis Buchanan; sons: Marc Buchanan and wife, Tammy, and Tim Buchanan; daughter, Cindy McKinney and husband, Jamie; and her only grandchild, Cody McKinney, whom she devoted her life to and loved beyond words; sister, Jessie Robinson of Burnsville; brother, Clarence Hunter of Hampton, VA; two special nieces; Teresa Wilson and Betty Jo Phillips; and a host of family and friends.

Dennis and Bessie owned and operated Dee’s Manufacturing until they retired in 1999. Bessie loved quilting, sewing, crafts, and candy making. She loved Tarheel Basketball, her family, and especially Jesus.

Graveside Services will be held Sunday, October 3rd in the Hunter Family Cemetery in Burnsville at 2 p.m. Reverends Ricky Ray, Barry Jenkins, and Travis Wynkoop will officiate. Pallbearers will be Tommy Stamey, Jeff Hunter, Steven Robinson, Doyle Robinson, and Kenny Buchanan. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roger Buchanan and Dennis Carroway. The family will be at the home of Cindy McKinney at other times.

At Bessie’s request, she wished for no flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Blue Ridge or to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Research Foundation at PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Autumn Laws for her wonderful care of Bessie during her final days.
