Yancey Receives $750,000 Transportation Grant

The NC Department of Transportation has awarded Yancey County a $750,000 grant to build a new facility for the Yancey County Transportation Authority. The county will need to supply a 10 percent match. The grant was applied for in 2018 but funds were frozen at that time. It will be necessary to update the proposed cost of a new facility due to the rise in cost of building materials.  The new facility will house the administrative offices along with a section for drivers and a wash bay for the vans. The funding will also cover the cost of replacing three of Yancey County’s transportation vans and to provide cameras for all the county vans. According to Yancey County Transportation Director Michael Harris, the cameras are for the protection of users of the transportation service and for the county’s liability.  Harris and County Manager Lynn Austin are looking at some county owned property for a possible location for the new facility.
