Yancey County has been awarded $1 million from the Golden Leaf Foundation. The funds are for the East Yancey Water and Sewer District to provide about 11,000 feet of water main extension and for grading at a new industrial park off of Hwy 80 South above the former Hickory Springs plant. The project supports the Little Leaf Farms project and another potential site at this new industrial park. The Little Leaf project, which is expected to bring 100 higher than average paying jobs to the county, is currently in the permitting phase and is waiting for a final response from the Army Corps of Engineers. The county will then proceed to the bidding process for site grading and begin the waterline extension. The Golden Leaf Foundation is the nonprofit foundation set up in 1999 to receive part of North Carolina’s funding from the cigarette manufacturer’s settlement.
