The Mitchell County Board Of Education voted unanimously to continue their mask policy for Mitchell County Schools for another month. Students are required to wear masks unless their parents have completed an “Opt-out form”. Currently approximately 80% wear masks. The board also approved the addition of Covid testing kits for the schools. Bakersville Community Medical Clinic provided 3000 free kits. Students are not being tested at school but the kits are available for parents to pick up and take home.
The Mitchell County Board of Education has also resumed work on a new school for the county. The project had been stalled due to Covid. They have unanimously agreed to apply for a lottery grant of up to $40 million that does not require any local matching funds. A previous grant did require some local funding. They are moving forward with getting updated figures for cost of construction.
The Board is also moving forward with the $1.1 million state funds recently approved for artificial turf for the high school football field. That funding was earmarked specifically by the state for the Astroturf project and cannot be used in any other way.
