Fifteen Acres Burn at Carvers Gap

Fork Mountain Fire & Rescue was called out shortly after midnight on Friday, February 11th to the Roan Mountain area. As personnel arrived at the Valley of the Roan they found what appeared to be a significant sized fire as the bald side of Carvers Gap was burning from the road to the top of the bald. ATV-6 was requested and arrived to find the fire crossing the top of the bald with 20 to 25 mph winds pushing it. The north end prearranged wildland fire crew was paged and they were able to get the fire under control a short time later. By 4:00 am local crews were able to turn the scene over to the US Forest Service. The NC Forest Service, Roan Mountain Fire Department and the prearranged crew members assisted with this fire.  Mitchell County 911 Communications also helped with radio traffic and reaching the US Forest Service. It is estimated 15 acres burned. (photos courtesy Fork Mountain Fire & Rescue)
