Primary Election Returns

Tuesday was Primary election day across North Carolina. Both Mitchell and Yancey counties had local primary races.

In Mitchell County, Republicans were selecting three out of five on the ballot in the County Commissioners race.  The top vote getter was incumbent Steve Pitman with 2,354 votes. Incumbent Jeff Harding was 2nd with 2,172 votes. There was just a 15 vote difference between the 3rd and 4th place positions. Clayton Roberts had 1,868 votes and Dewayne McKinney with 1,853. Jerry Prosser had 685 votes.

Incumbent Mitchell County Sheriff Donald Street won with 2,883 votes over Charles Dean Corn with 789 votes.

In Yancey County the only local race was with Republicans voting In the Yancey County Clerk of Superior Court race. John Robinson received 61% of the vote with 1,608 votes and Marie Anglin had 1,020 votes. John Robinson will face incumbent Johnny Riddle in the fall.

There were several close races last night. In the Republican US House District 11 race Chuck Edwards won over Madison Cawthorn with 33.4% of the vote. Cawthorn had 31.9%, a difference of 1,319 votes.

Under North Carolina primary rules, if no candidate got above 30%, there would have been second primary run-off election on July 26. The Democratic challenger in the District 11 race in the fall will be Jasmine Beach-Ferrara. She easily her race with 60% of the vote.

Ralph Hise had a narrow win in the State Senate District 47 race with 13,009 votes over Deanna Ballard’s 12,673. A difference of only 336 votes.

In the US House District 5 race, Virginia Foxx easily won over Michael Ackerman with 77% of the vote.
