Governor Roy Cooper has appointed Matthew Rupp as District Court Judge in District 24, which serves Avery, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga and Yancey counties. He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Larry Leake. Rupp is currently a Partner at the Angle, Rupp and Rupp law firm, and was an Assistant District Attorney for the 35th Prosecutorial District and the 26th Prosecutorial District. Rupp grew up in Boone then attended college at Notre Dame and law school at Duke University. After law school, he worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC serving as counsel for the House Committee on Ways and Means and Counselor to the Inspector General. He returned to North Carolina and worked in the Mecklenburg DA office, and returned to Boone to work in the DA’s office in Watauga and Avery counties.
