Howard Simmons

Howard Simmons, 83, of the South Toe Community, went home to join the Lord on Friday, July 1st, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Howard was born in McDowell County on July 6, 1938, the 5th of 8 children to the late Adrian Simmons and Clela Kates Simmons.

Howard joined the U.S. Marines in 1957, and his experience in the Marines played an important role in his life.  In 1959, he returned home to raise a family. For thirty years, he co-owned Simmons Brothers Logging with his brother, Bob. Howard loved to fish, and he mentioned that anyone can fish, but it takes real skill to catch a fish.  He loved to feed birds, squirrels and deer that would all come to the back porch.

Howard was a member and deacon of White Oak Creek Independent Baptist Church in the South Toe Community.  He played the guitar and sang at his church for many years. His greatest love in life was for his family, church, and church family.  Howard and Brenda would spend winters in Florida for the past 22 years, where they have made many lifetime friends.

Howard is survived by his wife, Brenda, and two sons: Jeff Simmons of Burnsville and Andy (Angie) Simmons of Lincolnton, and grandson Lance (Emily) Simmons of Newport News, VA.   His surviving sisters and brothers: Thelma Loftis, Genevive Harrison, Sue (Jim) Marsh, Bob (Jean) Simmons, James (Grace) Simmons, and Williams Simmons, all of Burnsville, as well as Thomas (Elva) Simmons of Old Fort.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to White Oak Creek Independent Baptist Church at 1956 White Oak Creek Road, Burnsville, NC 28714, or to Compassionate Care Hospice at 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Friday, July 8th, 2022 with a Memorial Service following at 2 p.m. at White Oak Creek Independent Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Ray Carroll and Pastor C.J. Robinson officiating. A private family service will be held in the Simmons Family Cemetery at a later date.
