The week of July 18th Yancey County Sheriff’s Office held advanced active shooter training at multiple schools in the county. The Sheriff’s Office has active shooter training several times every year. This year it seemed crucial to have a more in-depth advanced training. Officers learned what techniques worked really well, and what skills needed improvement.
“Protecting the children of our county is of upmost importance to our Sheriff’s Office,” says Sheriff Hilliard. “The Sheriff’s Office will continue to train using the most advanced techniques to apprehend the suspect and stop the threat, should there ever come a time where the threat is real.”
The training utilized many scenarios to give the most insight, information, and practice to each responder. The training was instructed by a retired SWAT commander. The training was made mandatory for every law enforcement officer as well as the telecommunicators of the Sheriff’s Office. Also participating during this six day training was Probation and Parole and Burnsville Police Department.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Mayland Community College as well as everyone who attended. “We feel this training was a great success. The Yancey County Sheriff’s Office will do everything we can to be prepared, should the need arise” says Sheriff Hilliard.
