Roger Barnett Banks, age 59, of Old Fort, passed away on Sunday, July 24th, 2022 at Care Partners Solace Center. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of Barnett Banks of South Carolina and the late Estelle Austin. He was also preceded in death by a nephew, Patrick Ray. Roger was a member of Faith Church in Black Mountain. He worked at Ingles for 15 years. Roger enjoyed fishing, sports and learning about history. He loved the Lord and many times he would say, “I was a sinner and the Lord saved me”.
Surviving in addition to his father, Barnett, is his son, Christopher Banks (Holly) of Asheville; sisters: Donna Peterson of Winston Salem and Marylee Ray (Jerry) of Weaverville; nieces: Regina Ray of Asheville and Angela Mosley (Steve) of Barnardsville; and best friends: Sammie and Rev. Coy Wheeler. Several other great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2nd in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Coy Wheeler and Rev. Lee Cope will officiate. Inurnment will follow in Academy Cemetery.
