The National Park Service is reporting that a 71-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident Aug. 2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Mitchell.
William Dashiell, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died on scene as a result of his injuries near Milepost 358, about three miles south of the entrance to Mount Mitchell State Park.
Those riding with Dashiell said at about 10:30 a.m. his three-wheeled motorcycle, was traveling southbound on a sharp turn when he applied his brakes before leaving the roadway to avoid collision with a newly fallen tree.
Dashiell crashed into a heavily wooded area with his motorcycle coming to rest approximately 20 feet off the roadway in a southbound lane culvert.
CPR was in progress on Dashiell when first responders from Reems Creek Fire Department arrived, but he died on the scene.
