Public Input Statement – YCS Board Meeting 8-15-2022

I am here tonight to address the verbal and written attacks being made against Superintendent Amos and this Board. For the past several months, I have listened to people say Ms. Amos is destroying our school system and that Yancey County Schools is losing good administrators and teachers to other counties because of Ms. Amos. First of all, I would like to challenge those administrators and teachers who have left YCS for other positions in other counties to come forward and tell us, in their own words, why they left YCS. I am really tired of hearing all of you who have spoken out against Ms. Amos about your version of why people are leaving. There are two sides to every story and the sad truth about people leaving YCS is that they can go out and tell anybody what they want people to know about why they left. The other side of that story cannot be told because this Superintendent and this Board are, by law, not allowed to talk about personnel matters. They cannot tell you about disciplinary actions, legal findings or any personnel issues that might be part of those people’s personnel files and which just might be part of the real reason they left. Sometimes people just need a change. Let’s leave it at that.

There are a lot of good things that have happened in YCS since Ms. Amos was hired. I could talk about those good things but I would need much longer than three minutes, so I encourage this board to share with the public through all available media all the positive things that have been going on in YCS since Ms. Amos was hired. YCS has outstanding principals in place, amazing teachers who I greatly admire, staff and support personnel who do so much behind the scenes to help make things go smoothly, and favorable support from county leaders. We have the best kids in the world with loving parents who entrust YCS with their children 5 days a week, 10 months a year. They all need our support.

We need to stay positive. When you say negative, hurtful things about Ms. Amos and members of this Board or anyone else for that matter, what you say affects entire families – husbands, wives, children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers. Is that what you really want for Yancey County?  I believe this attack on Ms. Amos is politically motivated and, if it is, all I can say is shame on you.

Words of advice:

John 8:7 “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”

If you can’t say anything good about someone, don’t say anything at all.

Thank you.
