A man from Upstate South Carolina was killed after his truck ran off an embankment in Western North Carolina on Monday
A spokesperson for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said troopers were dispatched at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 29 to a single vehicle crash near the 3365 block of NC-63, known as Doggett Mountain in Madison County. The crash involved a box truck hauling supplies.
The highway patrol said the vehicle approached a downhill curve, traveled off the road to the right, striking an embankment and causing it to go airborne before plunging approximately 150 feet down an embankment. Officials say the truck then came to rest on the same road below.
Emmanuel Valentin, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was identified as the operator and owner of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on scene. Jose Luis Alvarez Sanchez, of Inman, South Carolina, was identified as a passenger in the truck. He was airlifted to Johnson Medical Center in Tennessee for his injuries.
A spokesperson for NCSHP says speed was a contributing factor for this crash.
