On Friday morning, September 16th the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department received a call that there was a suspicious person walking back and forth at Bear Creek Church. The call came in as a rifle and a pistol shooting. The suspect was reported to be barefoot and wearing shorts. Around 9:30 am Mitchell High School, Bowman, and Gouge schools were placed on a soft lockdown because of the armed suspect in the area being pursued by law enforcement. Students were kept inside the buildings and continued their classes. The perimeter of the school was secured during the soft lockdown. This was a precautionary measure and no students were in danger. Deputies stopped the suspect as he was leaving a residence in a white vehicle and found the weapon to be a shotgun. Officers were able to do an involuntary commitment on him and Captain Cecil Hobson took out a warrant for going armed to the terror of the public. He was transported to Mission Hospital.
