Freda Marie Henson Young, age 87, of Burnsville, received her Heavenly wings on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving daughters. A native of Yancey County, she was the youngest of seven children to the late Oscar and Zona Bowditch Henson. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, who was her elementary school sweetheart, Jeter Robert Young, known to many as “J.R.”; her son, Robert Anthony Young, who passed away in 1999; a grandson, Myles Anthony Smith, who passed away in 2014, and also two sisters and four brothers.
Freda was a collector of over six thousand salt and pepper shakers, over sixty cookie jars and many, many dolls. She also loved gardening, canning, crocheting and quilting, but her greatest joy in life was taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughters: Sheila Darder Bonilla of the home, Donna J. Paige of Atlanta, GA, Delores Chaffin of Montgomery, AL and Teressa M. Carrington of New Bern, NC; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also, a host of extended family members with a special thanks to Violet Henson, Jeanette Henson, Leonard Smith, Melvin Henson and Walter Henson, all of Burnsville, L. A. Boyd of Virginia Beach, VA and Terrilyn Ramey Young, of Goose Creek, SC.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 5th in the chapel at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, J.R., following the service. Reverend Joe Bennett will officiate.
